Photographer Nick Brandt captured this haunting phenomenon in his photographic series The Calcified. During dry season, Brandt discovered, when the water recedes, the birds’ desiccated, chemically-preserved carcasses wash up along the coastline. The bird cemetery became known thanks to naturalist photographer Nick Brandt, who first published pictures of frozen birds in his journal On the devastated Earth. It is one of the most interesting lakes to learn about. Lake Natron is termed a salt lake or an alkaline lake because the lakes water flows in, but it doesnt flow out, and the only way the water can escape is through evaporation. For the Lesser Flamingo, Lake Natron is a singular, prime breeding site. Lake Natron is a lake in northern Tanzania, Africa, rich in minerals. Brandt theorizes that the highly-reflective, chemical dense waters act like a glass door, fooling birds into thinking they’re flying through empty space (not long ago, a helicopter pilot tragically fell victim to the same illusion, and his crashed aircraft was rapidly corroded by the lake’s waters). In some ways, Brandt’s photos mask the importance of Lake Natron to life in and around the body of water.
